Many thanks to the organizers, the speakers, and to you in particular for organizing the wonderful tribute to my mother and Jada's grandmother, Chien-Shiung Wu. It obviously took great dedication on your part to pull it off, and Jada and I are very grateful that you were willing to put in the effort to oversee everything. We were especially encouraged to see the participation of so many accomplished women in the event. Many pointed out that in addition to her scientific accomplishments, my mother fought for a woman's equality in appointments to the higher ranks of academia both in administration and teaching. It seemed like a fitting representation of my mother's quote, "I wonder whether the tiny atoms and nuclei, the mathematical symbols or the DNA molecules have any preferences for either masculine or feminine treatment"
I also would like to add that her thoughts went beyond the belief in equal intellectual capabilities, she also pointed out men and women's rights to enjoy the spoils of their accomplishments:
"In science and technology we dedicate ourselves to the study of nature, to the understanding of our environment, and incidentally to the betterment of life. It is the highest form of aspiration as well as satisfaction. It is a fulfillment of human passion. If, in this human society, women are endowed with just as many intellectual capabilities as men, why then should they be deprived of such aspiration and fulfillment? Why should they not share the responsibilities (and the satisfactions) of the progress of science with men?"
It was a wonderful, inspiring program, and we are so grateful for your work and the contributions of everyone involved.
Thank you.
